Nutty About Northumberland

Lindsfarne, Northumberland

The gorgeous region of Northumberland is a firm favourite among the team here at Four Legged Breaks, and with good reason…

With its gorgeous coastline peppered with castles and quaint little fishing villages, many historic market towns and fantastic walks to enjoy through the Cheviot Hills and Northumberland National Park, not to mention Hadrian’s Wall, Holy Island and Kielder Water & Forest Park, there is so much to see and do.

Happily, dogs are welcome on the vast majority of beaches in Northumberland without any restrictions, so you can enjoy mile after mile of golden sand, rolling sea and dramatic rocks. With so many wonderful beaches to choose from, overcrowding doesn’t tend to be an issue – in fact sometimes you might even have the beach to yourself, particularly in the winter months.

Some of our favourite places to visit with our four legged friends include the pretty town of Warkworth with its smart high street of independent shops and eateries, imposing castle, riverside footpaths and glorious beach and sand dunes.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is another favourite – you’ll need to take careful note of the tide times when planning your visit… The elevated ‘viewing platform’ near the priory is well worth a visit, and a walk out along the causeway to the castle is another must. Instead of beach huts, you’ll find quirky upside-down ‘boat huts’ on the small pebble beach, where you may be lucky to spot grey seals. The island is also a haven for birds, with many species of wildfowl and wading birds overwintering here.  A bottle of Lindisfarne Mead makes a good souvenir!

Foodies may also enjoy a trip to the tiny village of Craster, famous as the home of the Kippers which are still smoked here in oak barrels. You can work up an appetite with a walk along the cliff tops to nearby Dunstanburgh Castle, taking in great sea views.
